My Love

When did I fall in love with television? Hmmmm, I'm thinking when I was a child and I stayed up late to watch Three's Company with my brothers. Hardly an appropriate show for a young child but I thought it was the funniest show on Earth. My brothers loved sitcoms. I watched that along with M*A*S*H, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley and Night Court ad nauseum. My mother claimed to hate sitcoms but I always caught her chuckling at a few of their jokes. Family Ties was probably my favorite as I always thought my brother John was a combination of Jack Tripper and Alex P. Keaton. And I just thought Steven Keaton was the funniest father in the world. I didn't have a traumatic child hood or anything and used TV as my escape, I guess it would be more interesting that way but I just liked it. In the late 70's and early 80's when I was young, there were only a few channels and one TV per household so my TV viewing was limited. Not like nowadays. I'm very glad I grew up when I did because I know I would've been holed up in my living room watching show after show...kind of like I do now.
For a while TV had a bad rap. Like if you couldn't make it in the movies, you did television. I think the tides have turned. TV has found it's groove. The writing is spectacular and the acting is off the charts. Even though there has always been some form of great TV happening, I think nowadays there are some real achievements. Of course with the good comes the bad. I absolutely abhor reality television and really get angry at people for wasting their time. There are so many talented writers and actors out there and the fact that these talent-less, famous for nothing people are millionaires makes my skin crawl. But that's as judgey as I'll get. Who am I to judge what makes people happy? Some honest statements about my habits:

  • I watch approximately 27 shows weekly depending on what time of the year it is. I'm anal about keeping on top of it.
  • I hate watching shows days after they air as I want to talk about it with the rest of the world the next day.
  • I hate spoilers and previews as I think they reveal way too much and I like to be surprised.
  • I will watch certain shows over and over again. (Buffy, Felicity, Friends, etc.)
  • There are certain characters who will ALWAYS make me laugh. (Ron Swanson, Chandler Bing, Troy and Abed, etc.)
  • I cry at sappy moments, especially on sitcoms.
  • Good twists make me scream out loud.
  • When I watch a new show, it has to suck me in within the first episode or I abandon it. I just have no time! If it starts getting some good buzz and finds its stride, I'll give it another chance. (Ex. Parks and Recreation).
  • If I start a show, I will watch it to the very end no matter how badly it jumps the shark. I'm loyal, if nothing else.
  • I love fantastic shows like Breaking Bad and Mad Men but also get sucked into guilty pleasures that I know are terrible like 90210, True Blood and Vampire Diaries.
  • I miss opening TV themes.
I could go on and on.
What are my favorite TV shows ever? They are listed on the right side of this blog. They are shows I will watch over and over again and will always be happy with the results. However, unfortunately, shows must end. Some before their time. But don't get me started on that right now.
