The Vampire Diaries "Our Town" S3E11

There are always epic moments in television shows where words escape you. Like when Desmond was in the hatch, when Marisa Cooper was killed (again, thanks Andrea for spoiling that for me), when Laura Palmer's murderer was revealed, when Don Draper started to cry, epic moments crucial to the show's existence. And then there are epic moments that just make you glad to be alive. Such a moment is when an opening sequence of Vampire Diaries features Ian Somerhalder naked in a shower. Vampire Diaries staff, I implore you, make this a regular thing. Make this the poster for your show. I assure you your ratings will triple.
After watching this opening sequence once or twice (or 50), I was able to move forward with the episode.
As previously stated, post porch kiss, Damon is ridiculously happy in the shower (!!!!) smiling remembering kissing Elena. Elena is dealing with it a little differently as she is taking out her frustration on a punching bag. Yes Elena, we all know how rough you have it caught between Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder. What's a girl to do?!?!?
Stefan notices Damon's ridiculously good mood and says some stuff but no one cares because Damon was in a towel.
Elena and Alaric are still trying to figure out what happened with the ring and why Alaric suffered injuries. They either are 'running low on batteries' or have a shelf life. Either way it means they are in danger. They both are still feeling guilty for compelling Jeremy to leave but he's still on board as he's excited to move to Colorado.
Bonnie is trying desperately to 'unspell' the mystery coffin when she feels a presence in the area. Damon and Stefan arrive and feel it too. Damon shushes Bonnie as one of Klaus's minions appears. Stefan distracts is and Damon kills it. Ah, brotherly love.
Bonnie meets up with Elena, still not revealing her plan with the Salvatores, as they get Caroline's locker ready for her 18th birthday. Elena confesses what she and Damon did to Jeremy. Bonnie is pretty upset since she and Jeremy haven't really 'worked through their stuff' yet.
Damon frustratingly tries to open spelled coffin. Stefan tells him to forget it and he has Bonnie working on it. But they are still confused as to who could be in it. "Klaus has 6 sibilings. Rebecca's now with Klaus, one dead kid in the old world, one dead kid in the new world which leaves Elijah and two others; 3 sleeping originals, 4 coffins. Who is in that box?!?!?" Good question, Damon! (Watching shower scene again...) Stefan realizes that it's hard to keep this as a hiding place when Klaus has all his little hybrid minions snooping around. Stefan thinks he's bluffing and he's going to call his bluff. Damon says the only way to do that is be willing to lose everything if you're wrong. Exactly. (Dramatic music)
Bonnie finds Jeremy and tells her although she was hurt she wasn't ready to say goodbye. Jeremy tells her that it's a good thing to start a new life. Bonnie tells him that was exactly what Elena said. Bonnie is sorry he has to go but she has planted the seed with Jeremy that maybe this wasn't his decision after all. He didn't realize it at the time but I'm sure he'll figure it out eventually.
Caroline arrives at school still sad about her breakup but Tyler is waiting for her. She tries to avoid him but he tries to talk with her. He wishes things were different but he can't break the sire bond to Klaus. He wants to put her first but he has no control over that so he's staying away from her for her own safety. He's so sorry. Also, Caroline has on pretty lip gloss. He gives her charm bracelet for her birthday and wishes her a happy one. Okay, maybe not 'happy.'
Klaus says goodbye to Rebecca's coffin and has minion, Mindy, put her in her 'room.' Stefan pays him a visit and tells him he's not a big fan of his hybrid army and he wants Klaus to get rid of them. Klaus had hoped he and Stefan would be friends again but realizes they are mortal enemies instead. He wants his family back. Stefan threatens him again to get his hybrids out of Mystic Falls. Klaus threatens right back he will retaliate. But Stefan doesn't care at all and calls his bluff to see who will kill whose brother first. Mindy appears again to see if everything is okay and Stefan cuts off her head immediately. He reasserts his threat that he's out to kill all the hybrids. Klaus has literally created a monster, or at least awoken one.
Caroline decides to go home and is surprised by Matt, Bonnie and Elena. Since she blew off school they decided to surprise her at home for a picnic at the falls with cake, smores and tequila. Caroline isn't in the mood since she's dead and forever stuck at 17. The pals ain't havin' it. Elena has another idea. They're going to throw her a funeral. They take her to the graveyard so she can say goodbye to her old life and move on with her new one. Caroline is tentative but agrees and buries her high school life as Elena, Matt and Bonnie eulogize her.
Klaus summons Tyler and tells him he needs him to bite Caroline to annoy Stefan. Tyler wants to stay out of it and refuses to hurt Caroline as a hybrid bite would kill her. Stefan backs down (?) and tells him he'll get someone else to annoy Stefan. Tyler feels vindicated...oh Tyler, good thing you're pretty.
Damon and Alaric attend a Council Meeting Fundraiser together to keep up appearances. They examine a bridge model the one where Elena's parents died. I feel like that bridge will continually play a role in this story. Damon is over the party and says he will write a check and then they can leave. Dr. Fell appears and finds Alaric to blatantly hit on him. She immediately lets him know she is on the Founders Council and is quite aware of the vampire problem. She looks at the model and tells him how much she hates the bridge as she was dumped on that bridge during senior prom. Alaric tells her she should have dumped him and she agrees as she still holds a grudge. Dr. Fell asks where Damon is and Alaric tells her he went to make a contribution. She marvels at his generosity and everyone's. After all, some British guy just offered to match every dollar they make. Wait, what British guy?
Enter Klaus. (He has great lips) Klaus is buttering up Tyler's mom and Damon interrupts and tells him to knock it off. Klaus tells Damon that he and Carol have struck a deal that he will keep Mystic Falls and Tyler safe. Klaus wants his family back. If he does then everyone will leave everyone alone and keep safe if Damon can make Stefan do this. Damon finds Liz (Caroline's Mom) and tries to get her on his side but she's with the mayor. Get Stefan to stand down so Klaus will leave everyone alone. Dr. Fell is in a confrontation with "Brian" and Alaric intervenes as the white knight. Brian warns Alaric that Dr. Fell is dangerous but he leaves them alone. Dr. Fell tells Alaric that Brian was said prom date.
Stefan tries to kill another minion of Klaus but Damon stops him. He threatens him to knock it off because Klaus will make 20 more hybrids and put Elena in danger yet again. But protecting Elena is Damon's problem now according to Stefan. (!!!!) Stefan isn't phased and vows to be a better villain than Stefan.
Caroline texts Tyler and Elena chastises her for losing control. Bonnie snaps at her that Elena can't control everyone. She expresses her displeasure again at Elena having Damon compel Jeremy. Elena implores her not to tell Jeremy. Bonnie makes no such promise. And she leaves. Elena tells Matt that she doesn't want to control Jeremy but Stefan is just too unpredictable and she has to do what she thinks is right. Tyler shows up at Caroline's 'funeral' much to the chagrin of Matt but Caroline agrees to talk to him. He tells her that he stood up to Klaus and it turns out he's not controlled by him. So therefore, he CAN put her first because he loves her. As they start making out, Tyler uncontrollably bites her. He is mortified and realizes that he's completely under Klaus' control. Caroline realizes he basically just killed her and sends him away. Matt and Elena search for her in the dark. Stefan appears and knocks Matt out and kidnaps Elena.
Damon calls her and Stefan answers and tells Damon that he's 'making his next move.' Stefan speeds towards the bridge. Damon grabs Klaus and tells him that Stefan kidnapped Elena and Damon tells Klaus he has got to listen to Stefan because he's over the edge. Klaus thinks he's bluffing.
Matt brings Caroline home to her mom. They're both freaking out as they have no idea how to proceed with a hybrid bite. I feel like they should offer those classes at the Red Cross in Mystic Falls.
Elena asks Stefan what the plan is but it's obvious he is either going to kill her or turn her into a vampire. Stefan calls Klaus and convinces him that he's willing to kill Elena, his blood source. Klaus isn't fooled until he hears Elena's terror and realizes that he isn't kidding. Klaus reluctantly agrees to send the hybrids away at the last second before he kills Elena. Stefan slams on the breaks before they go over the bridge. Elena jumps out of the car and tells him to stay away from her. He took her to the place where her parents died and where she almost died. But Stefan HAD to exploit her fear no matter what. She can't believe that after everything he would put her through that. But that's all he has left. She tells him that he had her but he reveals that he lost her the minute he left town with Klaus. She just can't admit it yet. Bad Stefan, still sexier than sweet Stefan.
Klaus shows up at Caroline's and says that Tyler begged him to come save Caroline. Matt and the Sheriff don't want him there because they know he'll want something in return. He denies it and the Sheriff is desperate and invites Klaus in to see Caroline. She asks if he's going to kill her but he said he would never kill her on her birthday. Klaus takes on weird, concerned, creepy but totally sexy persona of concerned friend? He notices the charm bracelet she's wearing from Tyler. She thinks she's dying and Klaus asks if she wants to die because her existence has no meaning. He admits that he thinks his has no meaning from time to time but there's a big world out there waiting for her. He looks damn near genuine and vulnerable but I have no idea what his game is. He asks if she wants him to save her. She admits she doesn't want to die and he gives her his blood and saves her. As she drinks he wishes her a true happy birthday. WTF? Seduction? New slave? No idea. Or is he realizing he's truly alone and is looking for someone to latch on to? Is he trying to out piss Tyler in a contest purposely buying her a better bracelet? Or is he just playing us all trying to appear vulnerable and get the whole town to be on his side instead of the Salvatores? All viable options. TVD always keeps us guessing.
Damon picks Elena up and takes her back to the porch. Even though Stefan was a dick, Damon tells her he did call Klaus bluff and Klaus backed down. He was the better villain. They do have a shot at taking Klaus down. Elena isn't in the mood...for Damon's justification of Stefan's behavior. He calms her down and there's another moment. They have the best exchange ever:

Elena - You can't kiss me again.
Damon - I know.
Elena - I can't. It's not right.
Damon - No, it's right. It's just not right now.

Delicious!
The next morning Elena says goodbye to Jeremy filled with guilt. Bonnie shows up at the last minute. Elena think she's going to tell him the truth but she just came to say goodbye. Jeremy leaves. Don't be gone too long, I'll miss that perfect smile.
Caroline wakes up and she is healed. Next to her bed is a gift from Klaus, a diamond bracelet. Well played, Klaus...well played.
Matt finds Elena on the bridge. She decided to have a funeral for herself too and says goodbye to her old life, which probably includes Stefan, who was probably supposed to die with her parents. But now it's time for her new life. Matt eulogizes her and says how amazing she was and is.
Dr. Fell finds Alaric at the bar and says she lost a patient and needs a drink. In the woods, the Sheriff calls Damon to look at a body that's been staked. But it wasn't a vampire, it's a murder. And it's Brian!
